Student Work 33_edited.jpg

2D Media Studies

This course explores conceptual growth and personal aesthetic through the investigation of traditional and contemporary approaches to two-dimensional art making. This will be achieved through projects focused on experimentation and creative problem-solving using drawing, painting, printmaking, digital technologies, and mixed techniques.

In this project, students explored conceptual growth and personal aesthetic development through creative research, focus on experimentation, skill development, creative problem-solving and investigated conceptual/big ideas. Using the concept of their choosing and a creative guide, they thought critically about subject matter and building a cohesive body of work. Students coordinated a composition with relating objects that told a story that reflected their concept. Using found objects and imagery, students gained skills in relative color theory and translated 3-D objects into a 2-D contour line drawing. Students transferred their planned compositions onto the wall and used various painter’s tape to outline and block out colors to execute their work in a large scale drawing installation.

In this project, students continued to expand on their big idea. They told a story of a memory from their past using layering and material/mark-making experimentation. Combining three elements: object, location and emotion into a cohesive narrative, students gained experience in building a united body of work and layering both physically and conceptually in the creation process. Students were challenged to think abstractly to convey emotion and location and think critically about unifying themes through object choice, color, and texture. Material provided was Bristol paper, Mylar paper, India Inks and Backing Board, other materials were encouraged.
