Thousands upon thousands of trivial moments that meant nothing and every significant experience captured on tape are replicated in memory. I explore the intricate relationship between memory and malleable materials, exploring the nostalgic terrain of my childhood influenced by novelty, media and the colorful, kitschy culture that shaped my adolescence.

Using personal anecdotes and defining experiences, I use textile techniques to materialize memories into tangible forms. I confront the notion of media and novelty as both escapism and a reflection of our lives, blurring the boundaries between fantasy and reality. The textiles playfully embody the exaggerated scale of nostalgia that childhood often holds in our minds. By elevating everyday imagery, my work reflects my ongoing dialogue with memory, blending inherited traditions with the playful, colorful culture of my upbringing, where nostalgia is both celebrated and questioned.

My exploration into the malleability of memory goes beyond mere nostalgia; it investigates the complexities of identity formation and the inherent distortions within our recollections. As I manipulate fabric and memory alike, I invite viewers to reconsider their own perceptions of truth and reality. Through tactile and familiar imagery, I seek to provoke a visceral response that transcends the boundaries of time and nostalgia, inviting viewers to remember, whatever that may be.

about

my name is Devann Donovan

Devann Donovan is an interdisciplinary artist and educator originally from Murrells Inlet, SC. Her practice explores memory, nostalgia, and the malleability of personal history through textiles, painting, sculpture, and expanded media. She investigates how her own kitsch childhood, pop culture, and nostalgic anemoia shape identity and distort personal history.

Using labor-intensive processes such as quilting, sewing, painting and assemblage, Donovan transforms fleeting moments into tactile objects that feel both intimate and uncanny. Bright palettes and playful forms operate as visual seduction, like “chewing gum for the eyes,” while beneath the surface her work questions sentimentality, authorship, and the reliability of recollection. By duplicating and recontextualizing imagery from her own archive, she explores how repetition both preserves and alters meaning.

Donovan earned her MFA from Winthrop University. She is the Art Instructor at York Technical College and former Gallery Manager at the Arts Council of York County, where she continues to teach and develop community programming. She also teaches with the Cain Center for the Arts and is co-founder of Carolina Current Artist Collective, supporting regional contemporary artists, remaining deeply engaged in cultivating accessible arts experiences throughout the Carolinas.
