3D Design Portfolio

This course is a fundamental introduction to the elements, principles, tools and techniques of design as they apply to three-dimensional art forms. Traditional and contemporary approaches will be explored through a variety of media, processes and applications to facilitate students’ understanding of visual organization as well as an introduction to the process of sculpture.

The objective of this project is to introduce students to the elements and principles of three-dimensional design through the design and construction of three-dimensional paper and cardboard forms. Students gained an understanding of their chosen form in space and gained the ability to manipulate the scale accurately and proportionally by constructing planes and building mass. In addition to gaining an understanding of creating wearable art they analyzed movement and the relationship of form around the human body.

The objective of this project is to introduce students to the elements and principles of 3D design through construction of volumes in space with wire and line. Students explored how to create volumes with wire and other materials and how to utilize line weight, contour and shadow to create dynamic, well-crafted forms in space. Students demonstrated an understanding of the sculptural process; going from idea, to sketchbook, to acquiring materials, to building, to refinement, to finished product. In this project, students define line, shape, form, pattern, depth and space.

The objective of this project is to introduce students to the elements and principles of three- dimensional design through the design and construction of well-crafted wooden forms in space. Students learned woodshop safety and how to manipulate and construct with wood so that they understand both additive and reductive processes. Students learned how to create dynamic spatial relationships, explored implied movement, positive and negative space and surface. Students learned how to use color and surface treatments to create points of emphasis, to unify or fragment a form or to create movement through a form.

Students understand and demonstrate a use of textile techniques as well as basic 3D terminology. Students learn techniques involved in creating soft sculptural forms or weavings. Students explore how to create volumes with textiles and filling and utilize color, weight, space and scale to create dynamic well-crafted forms in space.
